It’s hard to believe that just a few weeks ago our main concern as a nation was Brexit – or the lack of!
Now we are facing very different times. Many of us have had time away from work to reflect and many others are facing losing their jobs.
Regardless of your reasons for looking for a new job it can certainly be a challenge to stay motivated during the process.
So how do you stay motivated when looking for a new job?
- Pace yourself: no one said job hunting was easy, but it doesn’t have to feel like a real chore either. The key is to take your time and focus on achieving a realistic target every day, a little and often approach is best or else you risk burnout
- Have a clear goal: now is the time to consider all your options and take the time to consider what goals you have for your career and focus your energies on achieving them. It is very easy to be rash and take the first role that will not offer any career development, especially if you have lost your job
- It’s always a good idea to write your career goals down not only as a permanent record but to help you remain focussed
- Have targets: once you have your career goals defined now is the time to make them happen by having clear and measurable targets
- Clearly the targets need to be realistic or else you will lose motivation quickly but short-term targets, such as number of applications or companies researched, will keep you focussed
- Quality not quantity: this might seem like an obvious one but in our experience it can become very easy to just apply for every role, especially as it can often be done at the click of a button
- You now know what your career goals are and want every application to lead there
- By only applying for specific roles you can take the time needed to make your applications bespoke and personal, which of course any employer will appreciate
