As lockdown continues in the UK the vast majority of construction sites have remained closed as sites struggled with social distancing, delayed material deliveries and workers who find it difficult to travel.
Thankfully, there are signs that things are starting to get back to normal, although it is definitely a new normal. Large firms such as Taylor Wimpey,
Persimmon, Bovis Homes and Redrow all confirmed work is due to restart on their sites and Ibstock, the UK’s biggest brick manufacturer is planning to reopen their brickworks as well.
Clearly the industry is eager to get back to work but there will be a lot of catching up to be done to avoid worsening the impact wreaked by the coronavirus outbreak on the economy. Thankfully ministers are now considering temporarily changing the law to allow building sites to stay open late and at weekends.
The temporary changes would allow work to be undertaken when it would normally be prohibited such as on a Sunday and/or at night.
